Description

Paralyzed since birth, 23-year-old Tan Shu Yi’s only request is for a wheelchair. She humbly appeals to the kind-hearted people of the nation to donate RM 2,010 to help ignite hope in her life, allowing her to attend follow-up hospital visits and move around more easily at home.

Case No. 1913: Tan Shu Yi is a young woman who has suffered from spastic diplegia cerebral palsy (SDCP) since she was just four months old. This condition not only causes cerebral palsy but also results in muscle stiffness and spasms in her legs. She cannot take care of herself, cannot walk, and has missed out on the joys of childhood.

According to her mother, Ang Lee Yong, there were no abnormalities when Shu Yi was born. However, at four months old, when she was unable to roll over like other babies, they took her to the hospital for a detailed examination. The results were devastating. She was diagnosed with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy. It was hard for the family to accept.

Despite the challenges that come with this condition, her parents never gave up on her. They carefully looked after her as she grew up and even sent her to a special school, where she eventually graduated.

Shu Yi now needs a lightweight, specialized wheelchair to make hospital visits more manageable and to allow her to move more comfortably at home. Currently, she relies on a walking aid with small wheels to walk, but she can only cover short distances with great difficulty, risking injury.

Her father, Chen Thiam Foo, who works as a truck driver, shared with a social worker that Shu Yi’s emotional state has changed significantly lately. She often screams, disturbing the neighbours and causing her parents’ great concern.

Mr. Chen has a modest income, while her mother is a homemaker. They have two other daughters who are working, but their income is limited, and the family’s financial burden is heavy. They are unable to afford the wheelchair that Shu Yi desperately needs.

Under her parents’ request, we at Da Ai have decided to help raise funds for Shu Yi to purchase a 16-inch lightweight specialized wheelchair, equipped with removable armrests, footrests, and a pelvic belt, priced at RM 2,010.

We sincerely appeal to the kind-hearted people of the nation to contribute generously. We also hope that this message will be shared widely so that more people can extend a helping hand to support Tan Shu Yi. Thank you.
