Description
Donations are urgently requested! A 7-year-old girl is experiencing frequent sleep apnea and urgently needs RM 5,700 to purchase a life-saving breathing machine. Due to financial constraints, her family cannot afford it. We earnestly request generous individuals nationwide to contribute.
Case No. 1850: Tan May Yan, a little girl, suffers from a severe congenital muscle disease that causes her legs to bend, preventing her from walking normally, and six out of ten fingers cannot straighten to grasp objects. More critically, her curved thoracolumbar spine is compressing her lungs, causing sleep apnea. Her father is a truck driver, and her mother is a housewife, making it impossible for them to afford the breathing machine. We implore everyone to extend a helping hand.
Her mother, Wong Shiau Thean, shared with a social worker that during her pregnancy, the doctor warned that the baby might be special due to excess amniotic fluid. Hearing this devastating news, she could hardly believe it but bravely accepted the reality.
Medical reports confirm that Tan May Yan suffers from Bethlem-like myopathy severe phenotype, making her unable to control her muscles since birth. She spent her infancy in intensive care and lost her ability to swallow, relying on a PEG tube for nutrition until recently, when she began learning to eat. Unlike other children, she cannot enjoy a lively childhood. Recalling her daughter’s suffering brings tears to her mother’s eyes.
As she grows, the severe muscle disease causes thoracolumbar scoliosis. This not only affects her mobility but also compresses her right lung, leading to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), requiring nightly CPAP machine assistance to breathe.
Wong Shiau Thean revealed that doctors found her daughter experiencing sleep apnea five times an hour.
Wong Shiau Thean has been her daughter’s constant carer; she was unable to enroll May Yan in kindergarten due to the serious condition. Moreover, since May Yan needs to visit the hospital frequently for follow-up treatments, her mother can only quit her job to provide full-time care.
From being completely immobile at birth, Tan May Yan has gradually improved to sitting, standing, walking with assistance, and eating on her own. While her mother is happy about her progress, she is also deeply concerned about her daughter’s health and future.
With her husband Tan Soong Yee’s meager salary as a truck driver being their only source of income, they cannot afford the crucial CPAP machine. Hence, they seek help from Da Ai. A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to raise RM 5,700 for the breathing machine. We sincerely ask for your generous donations.
We also appeal to kind-hearted individuals to share this message, spreading the word so they can receive more help. Thank you.
