Description

“I am 18 when my mother has a cancer recurrence. I want to help my family”

“I want to overcome these hardships and help my mother”, cried the incredibly strong teen Phui Guan.

Most 18-year-olds are preparing to face the real world and going after their dreams, but Phui Guan was forced to take care of her family members due to the cancer recurrence of her mother.Da Ai social workers visited Wong Kooi Chin through Phui Guan’s request.

59-year-old Wong Kooi Chin had a breast cancer surgery 6 years ago. However, her cancer cells recurred and spread to her spine and feet two years ago, causing congestion, swelling and severe pain. Madam Wong is extremely worried about her condition, but the doctor only prescribed medications and serums to clear the congestion, requiring her to have follow-up two months later. Madam Wong needs two serum injections per day, but they did not do her any favours. The already poor Madam Wong cannot consider private hospital due to her financial situation and can only rely upon morphine provided by her doctor. This cancer recurrence case could be fatal for Madam Wong if the cancer cells spread to her heart.

When faced with Madam Wong’s situation, the Tans had to make adjustments. This forced Phui Guan to take over her mother’s place for household chores and to take care of her mother.

Later that day, we spoke to Phui Guan in the room and we saw another look of hers besides her cheerful appearance. Although her mother told them to not worry about her, but they all know that she is going through enormous pain. Phui Guan knew she was not gifted in her studies, but she will continue to pursue her education to search for a decent job in the future. Although Madam Wong joked that Phui Guan’s household chore skills were not as good as hers, but she hoped that Phui Guan is always around. Phui Guan was not shy to deliver her love towards her mother even in front of the camera.

Tan Phui Guan is the youngest in the family; all four family members of hers have health issues. 60-year-old father Tan Boon Soon was a painter, but could no longer work as his hypertension can cause fainting. 27-year-old eldest brother Tan Wai Loon is an epilepsy patient due to an accident during his youth. 26-year-old second brother is the only income source in the family, with a monthly salary that barely supports the life expenses of the entire family. However, he too has severe diabetes that require medications. 18-year-old Phui Guan has just completed her secondary education and has received a scholarship sponsored by a newspaper office for a business degree. She hopes to change the financial situation of her family.

Hence, the Persatuan Kebajikan Amal Da Ai Malaysia calls upon philanthropists to help Phui Jun and her family members. A total of RM23,688 is needed for a year’s life expenses, the details are as follows:
Medical Fee: RM50 *12 Months = RM600
Adult Diapers: RM250 *12 Months = RM3,000
Food Expenses: RM1,200 *12 Months = RM14,400
Transportation: RM200 *12 Months = RM2,400
