Description

“Liew Koon Eng requires one vaccination every three weeks to sustain her life. This beloved tough mama needs your donation to pay for her vaccinations which cost RM12,000 per treatment.”

Liew Koon Eng (49 years old)’s husband, Huang Wei Xiong (50 years old) suffered a stroke and his mobility and ability to work eight years ago. This forced Madam Liew to be the breadwinner of the family. She thought she could change their family fortune by working extremely hard, but life was not kind to her as well.

Liew Koon Eng has a small tumour on her left foot. Initially, she thought it was only a haemorrhoid, but the doctor diagnosed her melanoma when she visited the hospital in January. She spent the last eight years selling vegetables at a morning market and earned a stable monthly income of RM3,000 – RM4,000. This income was enough for her family expenses and school fees for her child.

With Madam Liew visiting the hospital on a regular basis, she was forced to leave her vegetable stall to her husband and this affected her business. To make matters worse, the novel coronavirus disease only allowed them to earn a nett income of RM800 per month (After deduction of cost from the gross income of RM1,000).

During the treatment, Liew Koon Eng’s right thigh skin was used to cover the tumour wound on her left foot. Despite the doctor’s order to take extra care, Madam Liew missed her follow-up visits during the MCO period. This worsened the condition of her wound with purulent and the tumour has spread to her lymph gland on her left leg as well as her left lung.

Da Ai social workers paid Liew Koon Eng a visit. When asked about a medicine bottle that we saw on her table, she revealed that her husband not only suffered a stroke eight years ago, he also has congenital asthma. Besides, with her 14-year-old child still studying, poor Madam Liew has run out of ideas to support her family.

On 17th July, Beacon Hospital oncologist confirmed that Liew Koon Eng has a malignant melanoma on her left foot through written document. She requires an immediate treatment so that the melanoma does not spread.

On 13th March, Madam Liew went through a surgery as well as pre- and post- surgery treatments at Prince Court Medical Centre (PCMC). She could only afford to pay RM58,000 (RM50,000 through medical card and RM8,000 through friends) for her medical fee of RM62,000. She currently owes RM4,000++ to PCMC. As her conditions worsened, Madam Liew continued her treatment at the Beacon Hospital.

From 15th to 17th July, Madam Liew received three electrotherapies. After evaluating her condition, the doctor also suggested her to receive immunotherapy simultaneously. The latter treatment requires vaccination every three weeks, with each treatment costs RM12,000. The Beacon Hospital has confirmed that the medical budget for a year of treatment is RM220,000.

Since the cost is too expensive, Madam Liew decided to seek her medical attention at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. However, the related treatment requires Madam Liew to pay her own medical fees even in a government hospital. As far as she is concerned, this vaccination will cost more in Hospital Kuala Lumpur than in private hospitals.

In order to prevent the spread of this disease, Madam Liew decided to take the advice from the Beacon Hospital. However, she cannot afford the vaccination fees.

The doctor said that malignant melanoma is only common on white people and not the Asian region, thus it is rare to see anyone to have this disease in Malaysia.

Beacon Hospital oncologist suggested her with the treatment of immunotherapy. Although this disease is tough to overcome, but without any proper treatments, the patient edges closer to death.
