Description

A son of an elderly needs dialysis and with a living expenses of a whole family for one year RM34,920.

“The elderly man saves his son in his old age and becomes a rag picker to make money for his son’s dialysis” Mr. Choy Cheok Kee @ Choi Cheok Kee is 72 years old this year, and he still cannot retire, because his 33-year-old son, Choi Meng Kait, is not only intellectually disabled, but also needs dialysis.
Money is needed to cure his son’s illness. He gritted his teeth, and went on taking advantage of his spare time to buy time and earn money to save his son.
The elderly man’s leg was injured during a car accident many years ago, and now he just ignore the fact that his leg is injured and he is still
struggling on a tricycle to move around in the streets and alleys.
The people around that area often see him alone and work very hard as a rag picker, but no one knows that he is fighting with life. He wants to make money to save his son, and also to save his family.
He knew very well that his son cannot not give up his dialysis. Giving up his dialysis is as just like giving up his life. Therefore, he had to hurry up and earn a little more money, and he is even not able to stop for a while. Meng Kait has kidney problems on both sides.
He has to go through dialysis three times a week for RM150 each time and RM1800 for 12 times a month. During the dialysis process, injections are required from time to time. Each dose is RM80.
Meng Kait’s health is not good, having instability walk, he is also a child with intellectual disability. Mr. Choy Cheok Kee’s wife, Madam Tang (71-year-old), is also considered old and can only take care of his kidney-impaired son at home.
They have two children, Meng Kait is the younger brother, and his sister Jia Min is 34 years old this year. Jia Min loves her younger brother very much. She earns more than RM1,000 a month.
After helping her family and personal expenses, all her income is used to take care of her younger brother. Even so, the medical expenses are not enough to take good care of her younger brother.
The elderly Mr. Choy Cheok Kee understands his family’s financial situation. He cannot solely rely on his daughter’s meager income to support his family and help her brother.
He cannot delay it further, he has to go out to be hard working rag taker to earn extra income – that is the only job that he can afford to do, otherwise, his family will face with greater dilemma than before. He earns a maximum of more than ten Ringgit a day.
When there is no cardboard collection, then it is only a few Ringgit per day. The elderly man makes money not only for the sake of his son, but also for his family, because if he does not do it, where does the cost of living come from? Where does the son’s dialysis fee come from?
He also has to pay RM600 for his rental, RM150 for water and electricity utilities, and RM200 for food. Mr. Choy’s wife is not in good health condition too. She has high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high cholesterol level as well as heart problems. She needs to consult a doctor too.

They still have another big worry now, because the landlord intends to sell the house, and once there is a buyer, the whole family of Mr. Choy will have to move out from the house. Mr. Choy Cheok Kee entrusted and appointed the Daai Community Public Funding Platform to launch a one-year public funding for him, and authorized Daai to collect funds from all over the country.
